FANUC encoders, pulse coders and handwheels

The feedback shelf: encoders and pulse coders that sit on the rear of FANUC servo motors, plus the manual pulse generator the operator turns by hand. Small parts, and the most common cause of an axis that will not reference.

Encoders, pulse coders and handwheels

FANUC calls the motor feedback devices in this family by several names — encoder, pulse coder, servo encoder — and the seller's listings use all of them for the A860 numbers below. They are one family for ordering purposes: a rotary feedback device matched to a specific servo motor. The odd one out is the handwheel: the manual pulse generator is an operator part, not a motor part, and it is shelved here because it shares the A860 prefix and the same pulse-counting job at human speed.

Matching matters more than anywhere else in the catalogue. A feedback device is paired to its motor by number, and a near number is not a match; the blog guide on matching A860 feedback parts explains what to compare beyond the digits.

Symptoms that point at feedback

Feedback faults have a recognisable shape: an axis that alarms when it moves but sits still happily, position that drifts between reference returns, or a machine that references on one axis and not its neighbour. None of that proves the encoder is the fault — cabling and the amplifier's feedback input sit in the same chain — but it puts the A860 number on the inquiry. Quoting the motor number alongside, from the servo motors page, lets the desk check the pairing rather than the part alone.

Small parts, exact numbers

Feedback devices are the cheapest parts in the catalogue and the easiest to get wrong, because several A860 numbers differ by one digit group and cover different motors. Copy the number from the device's own label, not from a parts list or a previous order, and keep the T or V suffix intact — the suffix is part of the identity. The detail pages above state what the seller's listing says about each number and nothing more.
